This eight-week Artist-in-Residence Program hosts artists who have a demonstrated commitment to innovation and exploration and are interested in collaborating with fellow artists and young people as a means of creating new works. After the holidays are over, what do you do with the tree? Now through January 31, 2010 Montgomery County Solid Waste District will take the leftover live trees free of charge for recycling at both facilities. The trees should be free of ornaments, tree stands, nails and plastic bags. These trees will be recycled into mulch by a local contractor. Residents may bring in up to three trees per vehicle for recycling at no charge through January 31, 2010. Additional trees and general trash and solid waste will be charged at the standard rates. The Holiday Tree Recycling Program is popular because it offers citizens an easy and environmentally sensitive way to dispose of their trees after the holidays and saves on landfill space. The Montgomery County South Solid Waste Facility is located at 1001 Encrete Lane in Moraine and the North facility at 6589 Old Webster Street in Vandalia. Hours of operation are from 6:00 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Montgomery County

On Tuesday, December 15, 2009, the Montgomery County Commissioners rescinded the 5% water and sewer rate increase that was scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2010.

"Many of our families are struggling during these tough economic times. We hope this decision will help ease some financial stress for our citizens," said Montgomery County Commission President Dan Foley.

Back in 2007, the Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution that would have raised 2010 water and sewer rates by 5%. The decision to forego that rate increase was based on current economic conditions and the negative impact the increase would have had on Montgomery County Water Services customers.

"Montgomery County Water Services has worked to reevaluate its 2010 budget, allowing us to continue offering water and sewer services at the 2009 rate. We are pleased to be able to offer these savings to our customers," added Commissioner Foley.

Rates for 2011 will be evaluated at the end of the upcoming year.

FAST FACTS ON SHAKESPEARE IN SOUTH PARK
Play: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Dates: Fri-Sun, Sept. 18-20, 2009
Time: 8:00PM-9:30PM
Place: South Park Green at Hickory and James Streets, Dayton, OH
Cost: None (donations accepted)

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
A polished neighborhood troupe performs Shakespeare's romantic comedy in a beautiful outdoor setting.

DAYTON, OHIO-Fairies and Athenians are enjoying the late summer weather in South Park Green, a cozy hillside park with an impressive vista of the Dayton skyline at dusk. These Shakespearean characters are diligently rehearsing A Midsummer Night's Dream, opening Friday, September 18 at 8PM. The play is sponsored by Historic South Park. Last year they staged Much Ado About Nothing.

The delightful romantic comedy of mismatched lovers, enchanted forests and Puck, the famously mischievous sprite, will play out against the natural background of lush trees strung with twinkling lights a t sunset, a perfect stage for the magic-comic misadventures of the king and queen of the fairies, human lovers and bumbling rustic folk.

First-time play producers Phyllis Tonne and Galen Wilson cannot believe their good fortune in director, cast and crew. And of the 22 players, 11 are from their own neighborhood of South Park. Director Daniel Wilson, a resident of Riverside, is an experienced director and founder of Wichita's Shakespeare in the Park program. His wife Jennifer Wilson, a military professional working at Wright Patterson Airforce Base, is also an actress and costume designer of long experience. Two alums of Dayton's renowned Muse Machine, Michael Wadam and Natalie Houliston bring talent and leadership to the troupe, which is a healthy mix of accomplished and neophyte actors.

The University of Dayton contributed some of its alumni to the cast, including Paul Browning, now working at the Airforce Base and Alexan dra Robinson of The Kettering Foundation. Chris Rowley, ex-military currently at Woolpert, takes the stage for the first time since seventh grade.

Shakespeare requires men and in the need to cast more of them, the producers walked through the neighborhood in search of good-looking fellows of a certain age, just like talent scouts of old. They found Nick Moye, who's turning out to be something of a natural. The South Park neighborhood offered up another crucial talent, the all-important stage manager, in the form of Elizabeth Blackwell, a Wright State theatre graduate. Alex Pitcairn joined the cast having recently graduated from the University of Cincinnati theatre program.

Rounding out the stage with young people are Kaitlyn Paeg, 15, of Trotwood and Lydia Diabate-Tonne, a fifth grader at Valley Forge in Huber Heights. The director is highly pleased with his actors. Even after many years of professional directing and the founding of other thea ter companies, Daniel Wilson gently mocked himself saying, "I have a better cast than I deserve."

The troupe is in high spirits and rising to the play's challenge, which bodes well for a lively engaging performance. "Dream" includes a lot of physicality, fighting, chases and dances as well as delicate moments and broad humor, even a song or two. It promises to be great family fare. Audiences are asked to bring a blanket or lawn chairs. The Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances are free but donations will be accepted to defray the play's production costs.

"There is a surprisingly strong affinity for the work of William Shakespeare that has drawn us together again this year, and has us looking forward to the next," says Tonne. Indeed, the Bard of Avon seems to have found a home in South Park.

About Historic South Park, Inc.
The largest of Dayton's Historic Districts, the mission of Historic South Park is to promote home ownership and a healthy urban lifestyle in a close knit community. Known for its remarkable mix of Victorian homes, charming cottages and active, social (and creative) residents, South Park is a national award-winning neighborhood. Divnick International, Inc. dba Spiral Wishing Wells

Spiral Wishing Wells raise millions of dollars per year for charities and non-profit organizations around the globe. While the world is in a recession and charities are seeing their income decimated, Spiral Wishing Wells seem to be recession-proof. People love to toss their coins in and watch them race around the funnel, faster and faster as they descend the nearly vertical walls of the vortex until they disappear into the locked base (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfNpjrPTYzU).

One of the first Wells we placed is at the Air Force Museum where it has had over $1 million worth of coins tossed in since 1985! A blind service organization has raised over $10 million with their Wells. The one day record is $7,352 at a small church school. Another school raised $248,000 in 45 days to pay for a bone marrow transplant for a classmate. Wells are used at children's birthday parties where the children are encouraged to bring all the coins from home to help a charity in lieu of gifts. This teaches the wonderful lesson that it is better to give than to receive.

Wells are used by churches, schools, libraries, cities, state parks, museums, zoos, amusement parks, and every conceivable charity. They are placed in malls, ball parks, and at fairs-wherever people walk past.

100% of the money tossed in always goes to the charity...we never receive any splits.

Spiral Wishing Wells also provide a great opportunity for corporations as "sponsors" which helps the charities by reducing or eliminating their initial cost. With a company "Sponsored by" message on the sign, they receive the PR and advertising benefit in the most valuable retail spaces in any city. People spend several minutes at the Wells, smiling, laughing, and looking at the sponsorship sign. There is no other way to get such dynamic exposure INSIDE retail stores and restaurants, or in schools, churches, and other valuable venues. The one-time sponsorship cost can last for decades!

We are proud to be a Dayton area business since 1982, and to have a product that benefits charities and non-profit organizations so dramatically. We invite you to read more about our Wells at www.spiralwishingwells.com.

Amnesty dog licenses will be sold from 8 a.m., Saturday, August 8th through 5 p.m., Monday, August 24th at the following locations:

Partners For Community Living

The Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority recently donated two used vans from their Project Mobility fleet to Choices In Community Living. Currently updating their Project Mobility fleet, RTA donated the vans as part of their partnership commitment to accessible community transportation. According to Choices Executive Director Tom Weaver, “transportation is one of our most critical needs in providing services for 167 people with developmental disabilities. They rely on us to provide transportation but it’s a continuing challenge for us, as there are few resources available to help us provide the vans we need. This generous donation from RTA will make an immediate and long-lasting difference in the quality of life for the people we serve.”

Choices, a founding partner of Partners For Community Living, has been providing person-centered, community-based residential and other services since 1985.

Montgomery County

The Montgomery County Commissioners, the Montgomery County Solid Waste District and the Animal Resource Center are pleased to announce that the "Bark is Back" at the Montgomery County Bark Park! Part of the facility was closed for renovation and re-seeding in the fall as crews worked diligently to restore the turf cover.

"It's a critical part of our long-term environmental management plan for the property," said Don Freels, who oversees the park maintenance. "We have to keep a substantial cover on the former mono-fill as required by EPA regulations. Right now, the re-opening is temporary to see if our efforts have been successful."

Citizens are now able to use both sides of the Bark Park again but Director Mark Kumpf of the Animal Resource Center stressed, "The grass is for our four-legged Bark Park patrons. We need all of our two-legged companions to stay on the new paths installed last year. Animal Care & Control Officers will be visiting the Bark Park to remind folks to stay on the paths as well as checking for current dog licenses." A 2009 dog license is required to use the park. Owners should make sure that their dogs are displaying their tags. Lost tags can be replaced at the Animal Resource Center or the Montgomery County Auditor's office.

The Bark Park is located in Dayton at 6794 Webster Street, directly behind the Animal Resource Center. It is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. Owners may read more online at www.mcohio.org/animalshelter.

Partners For Community Living

Despite the downturn in the economy and the seemingly endless negative stories about business in Dayton, we know firsthand that there is still good news to share and that this is a great community with a caring heart! We recently included a story in our Home Address newsletter that our senior gardeners from The Resident Home Association really hoped for a garden tiller so they could continue working in their space in the community gardens at Wegerzyn Garden Center. Within only a few days of our newsletter being in the mail, two very remarkable men from Chammpion Window Company made a phone call to us and then showed up with a brand new, shiny red, top of the line garden tiller, while we had only dared hope for a gently used one. Not only did they deliver the garden tiller, but a new gas can filled with gas. What an uplifting story about business serving the community!

Montgomery County's "JusticeWeb" Receives National Award

JusticeWeb, Montgomery County's Regional Criminal Justice Information System, has received a 2009 Achievement Award from the National Associat ion of Counties.

JusticeWeb was created to give the criminal justice community a more comprehensive and accurate view of the jail population. The system provides the ability to stay on top of critical information including status of inmates, their charges, bail, and other factors. In addition, JusticeWeb provides access to over 2,000 users in over 150 agencies in two states to consolidate jail booking information, court case information and death records from 30 agencies in 9 counties.

JusticeWeb was also created to provide criminal history information. One of the driving factors to consolidate this information was so law enforcement and judges could determine domestic violence case information on suspects and defendants. The system automatically notifies Children Services if any foster care parents are involved in a criminal activity. Prosecutors are notified if an active defendant has had a new arrest or charges in any jurisdiction. Probation officers are notified if their client has had any recent activity. Courts are notified that people are picked up on warrants. Clerks are notified if there are active warrants on people that are recently deceased. Law enforcement has the ability to create lineups from mug shots that can be used with victims and witnesses to identify suspects.

The NACo Achievement Awards will be presented during the 74th Annual Conference held July 24-28, 2009 in Davidson County (Nashville), Tennessee.

Begun in 1970, the annual Achievement Award Program is a non-competitive awards program that recognizes innovative county government programs. Awards are given in a number of program categories such as arts and historic preservation, children and youth, community and economic development, jails-corrections, county administration, emergency management, environmental protection, health, human services, libraries, parks and recreation, transportation and volunteers.

McAfee Heating & Air Conditioning

McAfee Heating & Air has chosen not to participate in the "recession". That may sound a little arrogant, but instead of cutting back and laying off, Greg McAfee has taken the company in the opposite direction by hiring four more technicians and increasing advertising and marketing by 25%...this must be working because their sales are up 23% and climbing from 2008. "It's all in how you think", Greg said, "we can't control certain circumstances, but we can control how we react to them...if you think it's going to be a bad year, then it probably will be". As you can see, this positive attitude is why McAfee is a leader in the Dayton residential HVAC market.

The contest is named for Mrs. Dottie Yeck, who was a patron of the arts and the library, and an advocate to children who believed that you're never too young to make a difference. We have recently purchased ten buildings on Kelly Ave. These building were all shut down for drugs two years ago and have been vacant since. We are completely remodeling this property. We added many new outside street lights and will be adding a great kids playground as well! We are excited to be turning a vacant drug infested eye sore into a quality property for the residents of this city.
